A Bittersweet Prom

Last February 24, we had our JS prom at Hotel del Rio, with Candyland as the theme. I can't say it was super fun, but the fact that my friends were there was enough reason to make me happy. It came up short of what I was expecting, but nonetheless, memories are memories. Events before and after fun made the experience bitter, but it has something to do with discrimination and hypocrisy.

Man Behind the Legacy

Students come and go, but he's the only one who stayed. He is the teacher. The assistant principal. The coach. He is the man who started it all. He is the man who defended it. He is the man who was behind the legacy of the OLGAnian Math Wizards, and more.

He really is strict and terror, but I guess, its all for our good. Seriously, I don't know if there is anything he can't do. He's ambidextrous, he knows a lot of stuffs and he is talented.  Anyways, he's not that serious at all times. He gives jokes too! I have high respect for him. He's the one who taught me a lot about math, science and journalism. He is my favorite, and probably, one of the best mentor I would ever have.

He is one of the best and admirable teachers. But more importantly, he is the one who serves as the backbone to the legacy that our school have especially in Math Competitions. He is the one who mentored us. The one who reviewed us. The one who prepared us for success. Recently, OLGAnian Math Wizards successfully defended and brought honor to the school after winning in the Metrobank MTAP Math Challenge Division Finals. I'm proud to say that my brother is one of those who won. I can't believe I just missed his reaction when he went home, acting as if they'd lose. I would have wanted to see how happy he was. That look that say, 'I, too, can win.' Anyways, I know how long and hard they worked for this. Congrats to the winners, and above all, to the coach, who made it all possible.

An Unfriendly Customer Service

February is such a busy month. It's not just the love month, but also the time for prom. And ours will be held this Friday. Ever since the month started, I've been window shopping on what to wear, not that I'm that excited, but simply because I got no good sense and fashion nor the nose for looking shops to buy a dress from. Anyways, I finally have what I needed for the prom, except for a few minor details. Haha.

Choosing the dress was not that tiresome as I expected it to be. Thanks to my Mom, who came all the way from Capiz, just to help me buy things for the prom. The really interesting part was choosing the shoes that would match the dress. I found cute and adorable shoes, but the problem was, they got no size available for me. Plus, I met this really irritating and annoying sales lady. I understand that she's tired of going here and there, because she had many customers. I know that her job is stressful. Moreover, it entails A LOT OF PATIENCE. That, she clearly don't have. She said some really unpleasant words that got to my senses. Like duhh?! I know that your selling branded shoes, and I have money to buy that pair of shoes. It's not like I'm gonna steal it or something. I may not be saintly, but I know enough about reputation and respect, and I'm not gonna drag my family, or my school's name in any misconduct of that sort. I would have like to go and try some shoes, but I lost appetite because of her attitude. It's not like we're the only one who complained to her. Two other customers seem to have enough of her. I'm sorry, but I just can't stop myself from getting a little bit mad at her. Maybe she's tired or something, but I wish she could have been a little more friendly. For customers, the attitude and the way their sales person treats their customers has a direct impact on their decisions. Perhaps, that's where the saying, 'Customers are always right' came from.

That sales lady was the exception. The rest were so nice, friendly and accommodating. Some even gave me a really really good idea, and it sounds so fun. Thanks to her!

While choosing my shoes, I met some amazing people. It's really amazing how people, or rather, strangers, can click that much. Haha. Well, I guess, if we never learned to talk to strangers, we wouldn't have our friends.

That's all for now. :)

I Like It Better When It's BLUE

Valentine's Day just passed. I didn't had any celebration, except for a singles' date with RetroSci. This post is not about how I felt seeing couples dating, or girls getting roses and teddy bears from their special someone. This is about BLUE roses. Yes, BLUE rose.

Yesterday, as I was reading posts and updates on Facebook, I saw this girl who posted a picture of her with a blue rose. I felt kinda insecure, mainly because I never seen one before and I'm dying to have even just one.

I've been really fascinated with the blue rose ever since I saw it on a Korean drama entitled Stained Glass. I never knew beforehand that it ever existed. More than being fascinated by its beauty, I was intrigued if it really existed. So I did a few research and is still confused if they really do exist.

Blue rose is usually made by dyeing a white rose but thanks to science because in 2004, researchers were able to create blue pigmented roses using genetic modification. So what does it symbolize? It is said to symbolize mystery and attaining the impossible. After all, their very existence is in itself a mystery and the fact that they defy the usual course of nature makes it more surreal. They also speak of new beginnings, and in a way, caution.

Dyed or natural, it remain as my favorite flower. The famous quote may say that roses are red. But I say, they may be red, or pink, or white, or any color, but I like them best when they're BLUE.

Earthquake, Please Go Away!

Classes are suspended. Exams were postponed. All because of an earthquake.

This is like my 2nd time to experience an earthquake but it's my first for a magnitude 5 earthquake. The earthquake hit many parts of Visayas and the highest recorded activity went as high as magnitude 6.9 which placed some areas in a tsunami warning. It killed some people and had too many aftershocks.

My dorm mates went panicky (well I guess, that's a part of their nature). They screamed every time there is ground movement. It's kinda hurt my ears, though. We were in the dormitory when things started shaking, but the reactions of people in the school seemed a lot interesting and fun. Haha. I wish I could have seen one of my teacher's reaction.  Speaking of not so nice results, someone posted about Bisayas being baduy and that it was unlucky that the tsunami didn't materialize to wipe out these 'baduy' people. It kinda sad to think that some people can still think of those thoughts when people's lives could be endangered and I can understand the harsh reactions of people against her. People have the freedom of speech but it's not to be used without considerations and respect. Anyways, I realized it's not fun having earthquakes and aftershocks around. It sort of makes me think of not so nice results.

Aftershocks had struck us a few times and it feels like almost the same magnitude as the first one we felt for the day. As the night goes deeper, luckily, and thank the heavens above, we felt no more aftershocks. Hopefully, there won't be any aftershocks after we close our eyes to sleep and tsunamis won't devastate us, or any part of Visayas for that matter.

After a huge fire in a nearby place, we are now troubled with an earthquake. Gosh. Is it really the end of the world? I doubt that. As what my room mates and the Bible said, the Last Judgement comes on a day we don't expect. Who knows? It may be tomorrow or the next day or the day after that. But what's important is whether or not we have higher chances for salvation when that day comes.

GARA 2012: A Learning Experience

11:38:00 PM ivannejuare 0 Comments

The past years' GARA had been fun. We lost. We won. But this year is something new. I got to really participate in the competitions, not just for the 80% attendance goal. I joined the case presentation and the quiz bowl for this year.

I wasn't really keen on joining the case because I know the hardship and stress it entails, but I got no choice, especially because it is required that each house should have a 3rd year representative and Skousen's first choice declined the offer. Anyways, I didn't really exert much effort in the case study and presentation. It's like I was just there as a props, just for the team not to be in default. And the results? Oh! We won 1st place. I don't have the right to claim the victory, but I just felt overwhelmingly happy. :)

The results in the accounting quiz bowl is the exact opposite of that of the case presentation. Haha. We're in the last place but I'm still happy.

After the case presentation:)

Quiz Bowl:)

Gian as Katy Perry. So cute his dress:)

The Blingers.

GARA 2012 made me learn a lot of things. It made me feel experiences I thought I never had. It somehow boosts my trust and self confidence. The case presentation is like an exam for what I have learned in my Comm3 class. Because of it, I also met new and admirable people. I may have won. I may have lose, but at least I had no regrets. I had fun but most of all, I gained knowledge and experiences. GARA 2012 had been an avenue for a lot of 'firsts' for me.

Skousen may have ranked last in this year's GARA, but when you're at the bottom, there's no other way than to go up! Go Skousen!
