Christmas is just a few days away.
I’m sure most of us are anxious of the presents that we are going to receive or ask from our parents. We would be fussing over what we will give to our monitas and monitos. Some might even rush to their godparents’ houses just to remind them of your gift. We are wondering what that fat and long-bearded man who always wear red had in mind for us. Our parents, godparents and friends are like Santa Claus to us, especially during Christmas time. We try to have a review of what we have done in the year, whether we’ve been naughty or nice. But wait…aren’t we missing something? Is December 25 our birthday? Do we really have to ask for presents just to feel the Christmas spirit? Do we really have be thrilled with the coming of Santa Claus?
Christmas is Jesus Christ’s birthday, not ours, nor Santa Claus’. Aren’t we supposed to give the spotlight to him? After all, we owe him a lot of things, especially our life. He is in fact the greatest gift we have received from god, not the material things that only makes us happy for awhile. These are the things that we can’t bring when we die. But we can bring Jesus’ love for us.
Isn’t it ironic how we give more importance to Santa Claus than Jesus in His own birthday? I find it a laughing things since we forgot that Christmas exists because of Jesus. We grew up making Christmas list and expecting to receive presents, which are definitely not the main point of Christmas. Christmas is a time for us to thank God for the blessing he had showered us for the year but more importantly, to thank him for sending us the best gift we could ever receive, His son, Jesus Christ, even if it meant sacrificing his own son’s life for our salvation.
So this Christmas, let’s not just think of Santa Claus or the presents we are about to open on Christmas Eve. Let’s take some time to ponder on the real essence of Christmas. Let’s give Baby Jesus the spotlight he deserves, after all, it is his special day.
